Stainburn

This garden is to the rear of a 1980’s detached property on the outskirts of the Lake District National Park.

The garden was divided into discrete areas - each on a slightly different level and sloping away from the house in a southerly direction. Each was to have its own distinct character and be connected to the neighbouring area by a low step.

Raised beds and low retaining walls were constructed from similar bricks as those used for the house walls and those at the side of the house would have alcoves in which to site garden seats.

The Leylandii hedge, which screened the utility area, was replaced by a retaining wall backed by a trellis screen.

A pergola walk was constructed along the side of the house and it was intended to plant this up with suitable material to detract from the gable end.

Where the raised bed ends, an archway was constructed and this leads directly into the entertaining area.

It was proposed that surfacing materials should be natural sandstone and quartzite chippings.

The existing bird bath, statuette and pots & containers were incorporated into the design and existing electricity supply was extended around the perimeter of the garden to enable illumination as per drawing number 026/FSC/2.
